A shocking revelation has emerged, highlighting a potential health crisis in our educational institutions. Dozens of schools and childcare centers across the country have reported using sand contaminated with asbestos, a dangerous substance known for its harmful effects on human health.
The Ministry of Education has received reports from nearly 60 educational facilities regarding possible asbestos contamination from recalled colored play sands. The affected products, Rainbow Sand from Educational Colours and colored sand from Creatistics, were recalled after laboratory tests detected the presence of Tremolite, a naturally occurring form of asbestos.
Sean Teddy, Head of Operations and Integration, emphasized the importance of not attempting to clean up the contaminated areas. Schools and early childhood centers were advised to leave the affected spaces untouched and restrict access to prevent further exposure.
"We are working closely with these institutions to validate the presence of the recalled products and assess the extent of their use. By the end of the week, we hope to have a clearer picture of the number of affected schools and their response to this recall," Teddy explained.
This issue is not isolated, as similar cases of asbestos contamination in sand products have been reported in Australia. The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has issued an urgent warning, urging immediate cessation of use for these products.
Ian Caplin, MBIE's product safety spokesperson, emphasized the need for swift action: "We strongly advise anyone who has purchased these products, whether for personal or institutional use, to take immediate steps. Stop using the sand, secure it safely, and arrange for its disposal by licensed professionals. WorkSafe has provided a list of licensed experts on their website."
Caplin further cautioned against attempting to clean up loose particles, emphasizing the need for expert intervention: "This is not a task for amateurs. It's not as simple as vacuuming and throwing it away. Call in the professionals to ensure safe handling and disposal."
The contaminated sand was sold at various retail outlets, including Paper Plus, Hobby Land, NZ School Shop, and others. MBIE also suspects online sales of these products.
Asbestos removal firms have been notified by WorkSafe and are awaiting further instructions to develop plans for addressing potential contamination. The situation underscores the importance of vigilant product safety measures and the potential impact on our youngest citizens.
