Is a Chrono Trigger remake on the horizon? That's the burning question on every fan's mind, especially after the 30th-anniversary celebrations! While Square Enix has rolled out character polls and orchestral concerts, the highly anticipated remake remains elusive. But could there be more than meets the eye?
On March 11th, 2025, Chrono Trigger turned 30 years old. To mark the occasion, Square Enix announced "various projects" would be coming our way. However, these projects have been limited to character popularity polls and planned orchestral concerts. The remake that fans have been dreaming of is still missing. But don't lose hope just yet!
During a recent episode of the 'KosoKoso Hōsō Kyoku' talk show livestream, Dragon Quest creator and Chrono Trigger supervisor Yuji Horii was asked about the future of the series. His response? Cryptic, to say the least. When asked if the anniversary events were "foreshadowing" bigger developments, Horii-san's response was, "I can't talk about that." He followed up with playful warnings like, "Wait, if I say that, you'll figure it out!," "Don't ask!," and "I'll get in trouble!" before the panel moved on.
But here's where it gets controversial... Could Horii's evasiveness be a sign of something big, or was he simply dodging a tricky question? It's tough to say for sure. Perhaps it's just wishful thinking, but the whole situation feels a little suspicious.
Remember back in May? There was a buzz that Horii-san might have let slip news of a remake at Napoli Comicon. However, it turned out that it was the translator who brought up the series, not Horii himself. D'oh!
For now, the best way to experience Chrono Trigger is the excellent 2008 DS port. It's also available on mobile and Windows, but let's be honest, we all want to see it on the Switch, right?
And this is the part most people miss... The lack of a definitive modern version, especially on the Switch, has fans clamoring for a remake. But could Horii's comments be a hint that something is in the works?
What do you think of Horii's comments? Do you believe a remake is on the cards? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Is it possible that the silence speaks louder than words, or are we reading too much into a simple non-answer? Let's discuss!
