A Flu Season Like No Other: China's Battle Against Rising Cases
In the midst of a challenging flu season, China is facing a critical juncture. With flu activity on the rise and experts predicting a peak in the coming weeks, the nation is urged to stay vigilant and take proactive measures.
The latest data paints a concerning picture: a surge in flu cases across both northern and southern provinces, with the H3N2 strain dominating. The numbers speak for themselves - a significant jump from the previous week, with over 1,500 outbreaks reported.
Ms. Wang Dayan, the director of the Chinese National Influenza Center, highlights the severity of the situation. She reveals that a staggering 17 regions in China are experiencing high flu activity, while others are not far behind.
"The flu season is likely to reach its pinnacle in early to mid-December," she warns. "Prevention and control measures must be sustained for the next two months to ensure we can bring this under control."

Since November, schools across the country have been temporarily closed due to clusters of infections. "Students and staff should stay home when sick to prevent further spread," Dr. Peng urges.
In Beijing, there's a glimmer of hope. The local Center for Disease Prevention and Control reports that the rising trend of flu activity is slowing, suggesting the worst may be over. However, the city's flu season started earlier than usual, around mid-November, and the H3N2 strain is still dominant, accounting for nearly all local infections.
The current flu positivity rate is higher than last winter's peak but lower than November 2023's. Fever clinic visits are also lower than the previous two flu seasons.
Ms. Wang emphasizes the importance of flu vaccination, calling it the most cost-effective and efficient way to reduce influenza risks.
"While individual responses may vary, the flu vaccine helps reduce the severity of symptoms and lowers the risk of serious complications. It's a crucial tool in our fight against this seasonal threat," she concludes.
