Imagine the bustling heart of New York City suddenly plunged into darkness—this is exactly what happened at Grand Central Terminal on Thursday night, sending shockwaves through the thousands of commuters who rely on this iconic hub. At approximately 8:28 p.m., a power outage struck both the upper and lower levels of the terminal, leaving some MTA workers trapped in an elevator and many others scrambling through the vast space illuminated only by the faint glow of their cellphones. The blackout lasted until 9:17 p.m., according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
Interestingly, the newly constructed Grand Central Madison, a sprawling 700,000 square-foot extension of the historic terminal, remained unaffected by this electrical failure. MTA Communications Director Tim Minton explained, "Grand Central Terminal experienced a drop in voltage to the feeder network that resulted in lights going out in portions of the facility. However, no train services were disrupted during this incident."
Power was restored to the upper level by 8:53 p.m., and the lower level regained electricity by 9:17 p.m. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries. However, five unfortunate Metro North railroad employees found themselves stuck in an elevator that was in motion when the lights went out, necessitating a rescue operation by the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).
Witnesses described a moment of sheer panic as the lights flickered out in the expansive 33,000-square-foot terminal. Stacy Orea, an 18-year-old worker at Tartinery, recounted, "The light went out of nowhere, and everyone started screaming and yelling. It looked like small ants scurrying off the tracks."
Another employee, Kenny Peterson, who works at Luke’s Lobster, shared his experience of the chaos that ensued. "It was dark and scary; all the electronics in the store just shut off. It was complete pandemonium. Honestly, it was frightening. My coworkers were ducking down because we had no idea what was happening."
Yet, amidst the turmoil, some diners remained remarkably unfazed. Terry Hofler, a retired theater teacher enjoying dinner at the Grand Central Oyster Bar, described the moment with a sense of humor: "All of a sudden, boom! The lights went out. It was fabulous. Nobody reacted; it was like a quintessential New York moment."
Her husband, Marvin Ander, chimed in, noting, "People just continued with their meals. The restaurant had some lighting, and folks turned on their phones. Everyone kept chatting and finishing dinner."
Footage shared on social media captured the eerie scene, with the flickering lights of cellphones illuminating the otherwise pitch-black hall as startled commuters navigated their way through the terminal. One traveler remarked that the terminal was "totally dark," save for the MTA employees who were seen rushing around with flashlights.
