Open Championship 2028 Rescheduled to August: Avoids Olympics Clash! (2026)

Major golf tournaments are shifting gears! The 2028 Open Championship is getting a temporary makeover, and here's why: it's all about dodging the Olympic Games. The R&A, the governing body, has announced a schedule change, moving the prestigious major championship to August to avoid clashing with the Olympics in Los Angeles.

The 2028 Open, typically a mid-July affair, will now tee off from August 3rd to 6th. The venue is still under wraps, so stay tuned for updates! Meanwhile, the Olympic golf competitions are slated for July 19th to 29th at the Riviera Country Club in the Pacific Palisades. This isn't just affecting the men's Open; the AIG Women’s Open and the ISPS Senior Open are also adjusting their schedules to make room for the Olympics.

Mark Darbon, the Chief Executive of the R&A, emphasized the collaborative effort behind this decision. "We've worked with everyone involved to find new dates for our major championships in 2028," he stated. "We appreciate the discussions and believe that announcing these dates now will help everyone plan for the global golf calendar in 2028."

But here's where it gets interesting: The Open will revert to its traditional July slot in 2029.

And this is the part most people miss... The PGA Tour hasn't yet revealed whether it will tweak its own schedule. The adjusted Open dates could potentially collide with the Wyndham Championship, the final full-field event of the PGA Tour season. Could this lead to some tough choices for players?

Golf made a triumphant return to the Olympics in 2016 after a century-long absence. In 2028, we'll see a new mixed-team golf event added to the individual competitions for men and women. This format will feature 36 holes: 18 holes of foursomes and 18 holes of four-ball, with one male and one female player teaming up for each country. Will this new format shake up the competition?

What do you think about these changes? Do you believe these adjustments are necessary, or do you foresee any potential issues? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
