A Shocking Discovery: Redcar Care Home Fails Food Hygiene Inspection
A recent inspection by Redcar and Cleveland Council has revealed a deeply concerning issue at Silver Mews, a nursing home in Redcar. The care home's food hygiene practices have been deemed inadequate, with a shocking discovery that could put residents' health at risk.
During the inspection, officers found out-of-date food items, including corned beef, baked beans, and grated cheese, in the kitchen. These items, if consumed, could lead to food poisoning and other serious health issues. The inspectors also noted that some kitchen surfaces were not being properly disinfected, and dirty equipment, such as a can opener, was being used, further increasing the risk of contamination.
One of the most alarming findings was the presence of a staff member who was coughing continuously and discharging mucus in the food preparation area. The report stated that this posed a significant contamination risk and that a persistent cough, especially accompanied by other symptoms, means the staff member should not be working with food. This highlights a lack of awareness and adherence to national guidance on food hygiene.
The inspection also revealed that staff were washing their hands in a nearby bathroom instead of having hand-washing facilities in the kitchen. This practice is not only inconvenient but also poses a risk of cross-contamination. Additionally, the report noted that appropriate checks were not being carried out at the start and end of each shift, which could have prevented the discovery of out-of-date food and ensured better hygiene practices.
The inspection report emphasized the inadequate level of food hygiene awareness among staff, which is a critical issue that needs immediate attention. This finding is particularly concerning given the home's responsibility to support up to 41 individuals, some of whom live with dementia and may have specific dietary needs.
This is not the first time Silver Mews has faced scrutiny. Last month, a separate report by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) identified several areas of concern, including a dirty bedroom floor, unsafe storage and administration of medicines, and a lack of support for residents' personal hygiene needs, such as showering and teeth brushing. While the CQC acknowledged the caring aspect as 'good', they emphasized the need for overall improvement.
The findings from both inspections highlight a pattern of issues at Silver Mews, indicating a deeper systemic problem that requires immediate attention and action from the care home and the relevant authorities.
