"I sort of have made up my mind," Trump revealed to CBS News, adding a layer of intrigue to the ongoing discussions about potential military operations in Venezuela.
For at least three consecutive days, top officials, including Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and others, have gathered at the White House to deliberate on this matter.
But here's where it gets controversial: the U.S. has not shared its precise plans with its allies, leaving them in the dark about the potential course of action.
The U.S. government has accused Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro of colluding with drug cartels, a charge he denies. In the past two months, the U.S. military has launched strikes against vessels allegedly transporting drugs, resulting in the deaths of at least 80 people.
However, some Western European countries with interests in Latin America have expressed skepticism about the direct link between Maduro and any cartel, despite a 2020 federal indictment labeling Maduro as a top narco trafficker.
And this is the part most people miss: the U.S. strikes have been criticized by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, who stated that they violate international law and the law of the sea.
"We have observed with concern the military operations in the Caribbean region," Barrot said at the G7 summit, highlighting France's presence in the region through its overseas territories.
The USS Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group has entered the U.S. Southern Command's area of responsibility, adding to the military assets already in the region.
