UK Government to Ban Reselling Tickets Above Face Value (2025)

The government is taking a stand against ticket reselling, but is it a fair move? A controversial ban is on the horizon!

The UK government is gearing up to prohibit the resale of tickets for live events at prices above their original value. This move aims to tackle the issue of ticket touts and resale platforms that often charge fans exorbitant prices.

The Labour government had promised to address this concern during the election, responding to the outcry from fans who faced significantly higher prices for resale tickets to concerts and sports events.

And this recent decision comes just a week after a powerful open letter from renowned artists like Sam Fender, Dua Lipa, and Coldplay, who appealed to Sir Keir Starmer to shield fans from exploitation.

But here's where it gets controversial: The music industry's biggest names, along with consumer advocates like Which?, football fan groups, and industry associations, have called for action against these 'extortionate' websites.

Statistics reveal that tickets on the resale market are often priced at over 50% more than their original cost. In some cases, Trading Standards investigations found tickets being resold for six times their face value!

Rocio Concha from Which? praised the government's plan, believing it will curb professional touts and ensure tickets reach genuine fans. Concha urged swift action, advocating for the price cap to be included in the King's Speech.

Live Nation Entertainment, the parent company of Ticketmaster, supports the move, stating they already restrict UK resales to face value. However, sites like Viagogo and Stubhub argue that a price cap might drive customers to less secure platforms, potentially increasing fraud risks.

So, is the government's intervention a win for fans, or does it limit their options? What do you think? Share your thoughts below!
