He's urging housing developers to reduce the number of carpark lots in new projects located near public transport stations, aiming to encourage residents to use public transport more often. This idea is particularly targeted at young residents living near urban rail networks, as it can lower their living costs and promote a more sustainable lifestyle. In the past, relying on public transport was more challenging due to limited train lines and the absence of affordable monthly transport passes. However, the situation is changing. The government is now allowing certain transit-oriented development (TOD) projects in Kuala Lumpur to relax parking requirements, making it easier for young residents to consider a carless lifestyle. This shift is supported by the idea that young people can save money on car ownership, which could be used for a down payment on their first home.
To illustrate, Residensi Far East is connected to the Kuchai MRT station, and TTDI Ascencia is another TOD example, albeit on a higher-end scale. Lili Apartment, just across the road from Kuchai MRT, offers affordable options, and is just two stations away from TRX. These examples showcase the potential for young workers to live near train stations without owning a car.
But what about the convenience of having a car? Well, that's a valid concern. As Danny Tan, a motoring industry expert, points out, the availability of cars and the support of family can make a significant difference.
